Maya Gross
An eternal student, yoga therapist, and senior yoga teacher with 25 years of committed yoga sadhana. She teaches in Israel and abroad, and is the founder of The Shala and the Ashtanga Yoga Tel Aviv School on Gordon Street, where she also directs one of the country’s longest-running yoga teacher training programs.
A regular visitor to India, Maya studied in Mysore with the late professor and father of Ashtanga Yoga, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, as well as with his grandson Sharath Jois and daughter Saraswathi Jois. For the past eight years, she has been continuing her studies under her teacher Sharmila Desai. Maya has trained with many senior teachers in the Ashtanga lineage and in other traditions. She studied Yoga Philosophy and Transcendental Meditation with Professor Narsimhan and Dr. Jayashree in Mysore, and has been studying Vedanta and traditional yogic texts for over twenty years.
In addition to her yoga background, Maya is a certified practitioner of the bodywork therapy Body-Wisdom, and integrates yoga therapy techniques into her practice. For many years she has immersed herself in Buddhist traditions, studying with monks, lamas, and spiritual teachers from around the world. She guides meditations and workshops and has released a meditation album - Yoga Nidra.
For over a decade, Maya has served as the Israeli ambassador of the charity organization Yoga Gives Back, producing numerous events whose proceeds support sustainable living and education for women and children from underprivileged communities in India. She has also dedicated years of volunteer work, offering yoga practices and spiritual teachings in hospitals, to women facing cancer, to soldiers in combat zones, and more.
Maya lives in Tel Aviv with her partner and their two children.
